Telegram vs WhatsApp: Which is the best messaging service?
WhatsApp reign threatened by a challenger coming from distant lands: the Telegram, Russian service that gained more than 5 million users over the last few days.
The program currently top most downloaded from the App Store and gained international notoriety. Will the Telegram really has the potential to become the next “King of instant messengers”?
To answer this question we decided to put the two services side by side and observe their main strengths and weaknesses.
The biggest asset Telegram is indeed a major concern and transparency about the safety and privacy of its users. The service uses two layers of a cryptographic protocol based on the classic AES-256, in addition to working with encryption and RSA 2048 exchange Diffie-Hellman keys. Moreover, the application has a very interesting and novel feature called “Secrets Chats” .
These are chats even safer than conventional, using encryption end-to-end (the messages are decrypted only when it reaches the recipient’s phone) and leave no trace in the Telegram servers. Also, you can assign an expiry date to their secret chats so that they are automatically deleted after a few minutes.
And it does not end there: the application does not allow you to forward any content received through a Secret Chat, hindering the sharing of images or inappropriate videos to unauthorized persons .
Free the truth
Although most people do not pay attention to this small detail, it is worth remembering that WhatsApp is not a 100% free software – it just provides a really long period of testing, popularly known as trial . After a year of use, you must shell out $ 0.99 (about R $ 2.31) for an annual subscription. In fact, it is an insignificant amount, but may annoy quite a few people (especially those who do not have an international credit card, required for payment of such fee).
The Telegram, in turn, is free forever. No hidden purchases or periodic subscriptions – and it also lacks the much hated advertisements. This is true to the fact that the creators of the service do not plan financial gain all the costs with application infrastructure are settled with a generous donation made by the investor Digital Fortress (which in turn is headed by Pavel Durov, brother Programmer Nikolai Durov, who was responsible for the effective creation of the messenger).
According to the official website of the Telegram, the money donated by Pavel is still far from being finished, and when it eventually happens, the service will depend on donations from users or sell their own additional features not essential.
I’m for everyone!
Being an open source software, anyone can study and modify the source code of the Telegram, creating apps derivatives or by conferring even if there is nothing suspicious behind the program.
The codes of official applications can be found on Github , the encryption protocol and API are also available to anyone who is interested in them. In the near future, the users of the Telegram service could translate into your native language collaboratively.
Software makers cherish both the open source philosophy are even thinking of allowing anyone to create their own servers for the service. Ever wondered how it must be nice to be part of the infrastructure of one of the most popular instant messengers in the world?
Multiplatform and synchronization
With official versions for Android and iOS (and unofficial for Windows Phone , Windows , Mac , Linux , Chrome App and web interface ), the Telegram draws attention to keep the data from its users always synchronized between multiple platforms supported by the service.
That means, basically, you can start a conversation on your smartphone and continue it on the web version, having access to your entire message history and shared files between all your contacts.
The only exception is, of course, for safe chats, where sent messages are deleted instantly so pass of the Telegram servers to the recipient’s device.
Telegram is another advantage of its enormous capacity for group chats: Russian app lets you chat with up to 200 people simultaneously, while WhatsApp does not support more than 50 contacts in one chat.
And when WhatsApp gets the better
Obviously, not everything is perfect: the Telegram also has some negative points that deserve to be highlighted and through which the WhatsApp comes out victorious.
And some of the weaknesses Russian app are:
Wall of voice and VoIP calls
One of WhatsApp more fun (and useful on occasion) functions is sending voice messages to a contact or group chat. The Telegram, unfortunately, does not yet have this kind of appeal and there is no provision for something like that is developed.
Likewise, part of the plans include use WhatsApp VoIP calls in your application in the near future in an attempt to compete directly with Viber. When this happens, the Telegram will be further delayed in the issue of voice, which forces us to take a few points of the European service.
In short, who is the winner?
It is impossible to deny that Telegram is software with massive potential. The app brings all that WhatsApp has best features and also adds privacy very interesting for anyone who values the security of their personal data.
The main concern is the financial aspect of the service. Will the brothers be able Durov maintain a quality infrastructure without resorting to third party investments or insertion of advertising in the app?
